Medicare And Additional Insurance Options Available
Medicare was originally designed to asssist seniors to have an option for affordable health care. Since insurance is medically underwritten usually those aged 65 or over would have very high, and in most cases unaffordable premiums and limited coverage. President Lyndon B. Johnson along with the Congress and the Senate came up with Medicare to help solve this epidemic of seniors not being able to obtain creditable coverage.

Medicare Parts A and B
Originally Medicare had 2 parts. Part A for hospital coverage and Part B for doctors office visits lab tests and other outpatient procedures. Both parts A and B were set up with deductibles
(amount you must pay before benefits actually kick in). After the deductibles were met the consumer was responsible for 20% of all medical bills. As the cost of medical care rose over the years the 20% and the deductibles became very expensive. There became a need for beneficiaries to purchase additional insurance policies called Medicare Supplement plans also known as medigap to help defray these high medical costs.

Over the years as medicine advanced and effective prescription drugs became available once again there became a need for more extensive coverage due to the high costs of medically necessary prescriptions.
Once again the government stepped in and tried to find a solution for this growing problem. Through negotiations with private insurers and the pharmaceutical industry the government came up with Medicare Part D which would help seniors by making prescription drugs more afordable along with special low income subsidies for low income individuals.

Now that there was a temporary solution for some of the gaps and problems associated with the gaps in Medicare it was discovered that some people could not afford to purchase Medigap or Medicare Supplement Plans.

Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C)
This type of plan is also provided through private insurance companies. These policies work differently than a Medicare Supplement Policy. Medicare Advantage plans are designed to provide you with lower co-payments and additional benefits than the Original Medicare program. These plans usually have very low or no monthly premium in addition to your Part B premium. These policies may be offered in the form of HMO, PPO, or PFFS. California has one of the larger Federal reimbursement rates in the country you can usually find a great plan with little or no premium and low co pays as well.
Medicare Part D Plans
(Prescription Drug Benefit)
Medicare Part D is your prescription drug plan. These plans are optional but highly recommended. Part D is a Federal regulated program but is administered through private insurers. For details please visit our Part D Page or click here for assistance
What is The Best Plan For You And How to Choose
As you may have begun to realize, there are many factors involved in choosing the best Medicare policy that will properly meet your specific criteria and needs. This is why we strongly recommend finding a broker who specilizes in Medicare Plans.
The duty of an insurance agent or broker is to represent the consumer in finding the best policy available for the client. Many brokers are contracted with most, if not all the major companies in your area, although there are some that may only represent one or two companies.
Be sure to ask this question when shopping for the best plan. A broker works for you but is paid by the insurance company so you will not pay any extra by utilizing the assistance of a professional. This also gives you an advocate and a personal advisor if you encounter any questions or concerns.
